The title of this painting is

"Happiness".

Can you see why its name is such?

The beautiful girl in the photo

is the artist's daughter.

The photo doesn't really do it justice.

It positively leaps with life in person.

The colors are not properly portrayed here either.

In reality, they are the most gorgeous colors,

saturated and brilliant

and placed perfectly.

So it's Day 6 of the photo a day challenge,

and once again it was a tough decision.

Yes, I'm one of those people who have a

hard time with the little decisions...

I hope this one makes you smile.

As you may have suspected,

there is a story behind this.

My buddy, Kateri of Leaves of Glass, made this for me.

It's one of our "codewords".

How did "hampacket" come to be?

It went something like this...

Kateri was visiting us from Chicago.

We were in the kitchen with the boy.

I was getting a ham ready to put in the oven.

The boy picks up the little packet that comes with the ham.

You know, the glaze packet?

"What's this packet for?"
"It's a packet. For the ham."

"It's a hampacket!"

"And it rhymes with Piewacket!"

And so on, and so on...

With lots of silliness and laughing.

So that following Christmas,

Kateri sent me this embroidery hoop.

Awesome, right?

I pass it many times during the course of my day.

It always, always makes me smile.

Thank you, Kateri.

You light up my life.

Also, this just happened.

A moment of relaxation and quiet.

In other words, the boys have left the building.

*wink*

I love the lighting in the room at dusk.

You may not know that I take a 4 mile walk,

usually during the lunch hour,

usually with Ron,

usually 5 days a week.

Yesterday was particularly beautiful.

The sky so crystal clear blue.

The hills green and sprinkled with wildflowers.

The hawks soaring magnificently.

We paused here and there so that I

could capture the day with my phone camera.

I wanted to share the feeling of the day

with you, dear hearts.

Welcome Fall...

Hello, dear ones!

It's been a little while

since I did my last post.

This Fall,

I seem to be falling behind

in my blog posts.

(Pardon the bad pun!)

I thought I'd share with you

some of my autumnal decorations.

It's a bit of a tradition for me

to use the same little decorations

year after year.

I like to think it reminds me

and my family

of all the wonderful autumns

we have shared in the past.

I do love traditions...

My front door plaque.

It's not grand,

it's rustic and sort of whimsical.

I bought this plaque the first year we moved to our house.

I had become good friends with

the woman who lived two doors down from me

so I bought one for her too.

She has since moved to Arizona,

but she stops by every spring

to say hello.

She tells me that every fall she puts her

matching plaque on her front door,

and she thinks of me each time.

I can't tell you how touched I am by that.

She went through breast cancer and a mastectomy

when she was in her mid 30s.

So to think of her, still here,

now healthy,

hanging that little plaque on her door each fall...

Well, it makes me weepy.

Of course,

I will do the same each year.

Hang it proudly,

think of my dear friend.

It's our little tradition, as friends.

We have two beautiful maples in our front yard.

I may be biased,

but I think ours are the most vibrant in the neighborhood!

This horse bench was a gift from my dad.

It just received a fresh coat of espresso brown paint.

I love it so much.

A simple accent of fall leaves in the form of a garland

grace the top of my beloved bench.

And a few little pumpkins...

I changed up my dining room table display this fall.

I added antlers to the simple, rustic flower arrangements:

Two brown paper bags filled with daisies,

several candles in old candle holders,

and one large vanilla colored candle on a cream pedestal.

As you can see in the background of this shot,

I'm a collector.

As if you didn't know...

*wink*

On the mantle, in the family room.

One large brown paper bag filled with leaves and posies,

and lots of Indian corn (my favorite fall addition).

The colors of the kernels of corn inspire me endlessly.

The autumnal colors all around me are the stuff of dreams.

I've been busy,

Our boy turned 15 last Friday.

*sniff*

He had 2 friends over,

we went Go-Karting,

then to dinner,

then home for cake (cheesecake).

All per his request.

It was a whirlwind evening of

teenagers,

silliness,

laughter,

and too much sugar.

I started a little project,

for myself.

*gasp*

I had a little cocktail on Thursday.

Grapefruit IZZE and vodka.

Delicious and relaxing.

I snipped some of the last of this round of roses
from our garden
yesterday morning.

It's been mostly overcast for the past

two weeks.

Yesterday afternoon,

the sun peeked through!

Amazing how the sun brings such a lift.

Happy Monday, dear ones!

I hope you had a rejuvenating weekend.

I'd like to start this week off with more

Mammoth memories.

These particular photos evolve around our

super secret fishing spot.

We spend a good part of our

Mammoth vacations

fishing.

Our spot is simply heavenly.

Photos really don't do it justice,

but hopefully you'll get a sense of

the grandeur of nature through these

amateur photographs of mine...

I like to sit in the grass in this very spot

next to the lake inlet

when I'm not fishing.

Many ideas are born here.

It's a bit of a grueling hike to our spot,

here is the lush setting along the way.

It's amazing.

Late in the afternoon,

the sun makes the lake dance.

We felt helpless.

Ron climbed up on the ladder

and put it in it's place above the front porch.

It's never come down.

We've had to replace the flag twice.

This is our third one.

They do get ravaged by

the weather...

As we were ravaged

on that early September morning.

Against a crystal clear,

bright blue sky.

When so many never lived to see the sunset that day.

Never to kiss their loved ones again.

I have a thing for shacks...

...and there are two sweet little shacks

on the way up the mountain to our favorite

fishing spot.

We pass them every year.

And every year,

I fall a little more in love with them.

You'll just drive along this road...

expansive views of mountains,

flatlands,

the occasional waterfall,

and then...

The two little shacks appear.

One larger than the other.

They're just perfect.

Oh, how I wish I could own this bit of land.,

There's even a sweet little stream.

I wouldn't change a thing.

Except perhaps

add a third,

more livable,

little shack

for our visits.

Signs...

I have a thing for old signs.

Can you tell?

I took a few snapshots of the old signs we passed

on our way up the mountain.

To be honest,

I didn't have the heart to keep asking Ron

to stop so I could snap pics

of every sign I loved.

It's a 7 hour drive without stops.

The natives would have become very restless.

So, alas, there are only a sprinkling of the signs

I loved from here to there.

I hope you enjoy them.

I feel each one is special in its own way.

Each one is a true work of art.

Each one has been seen

more times than we can count,

by more sets of eyes than we can count,

for years upon years.

That thought alone makes me happy!

I haven't even loaded the photos from our trip that are on Ron's camera yet.

He has the super fancy camera.

I know there are more signs on his because

on our way up the mountain,

I had an epiphany.

This is the meadow.

The meadow I dream of.

The meadow I love.

I see it twice a year:

on our way up the mountain

and on our way down the mountain.

It's a magical spot on this earth.

Well, dear ones,

we made it home from Mammoth!

It was such a wonderful week.

I took 500+ photos.

I'm still sorting through them.

A golden green meadow...

Hello, darling dears.

I'm not one to waste my time

wishing I were elsewhere.

I'm the one who believes in

the here and now.

However.

Some days are

just too blech.

Too stressful.

Too much of

what they shouldn't be.

Like today.

For me.

So (since I don't have a meadow on hand),

I'm going to take a few moments,

close my eyes,

imagine that golden green meadow.

Listen to the birds.

Feel the breeze,

and the warmth of the sun.

Smell the earth.

Ahhhh...

Much better.

I truly hope you're having a beautiful day.

Simplest summer salad...

This simple salad is a staple in our home.

I make it several times a week.

It's so refreshing,

but best of all,

it takes only about 5 minutes to make.

No oven, no stove top required.

And only 5 ingredients:

cucumbers

tomatoes

rice vinegar

sea salt

cracked black pepper.

I stir well,

cover and refrigerate.

Let it sit for a bit in the fridge

to allow the flavors to blend.
Added bonus:
the colors look pretty.

Try it, you'll like it!

in southern California.

This has been the summer of custom orders at Fringe.

I've been quite surprised by them.

Some from brand new, delightful clients.

One from a cherished client of more than 3 years.

I know that in the handmade world

custom orders can sometimes inspire apprehension.

Some artists have unpleasant experiences.

I have to say,

I've been the luckiest girl.

My custom order clients

are exceptional

and very, very special.

I love to create a piece

that has a specific purpose.

Usually for an occasion,

it adds a twist to my usual process

of creating.

It's an honor for me

to be chosen as the one to create

such a personal, important piece.

I find the most rewarding part of a custom order

to be the friendships I have formed.

Yarn can truly weave a friendship.

Here are some examples of

what I've been working on

the past few weeks.

Out of these creations,

relationships were formed

feelings were shared

hearts swelled

smiles grew.

Lipstick red luxury shrug with

two creamy rose brooches.

Butter soft yarn.

Vintage glass beads

embellish these rose brooches.

Two extra oversized cowls.

One of my circle brooches.

Made with love.

What I'm currently working on.

This yarn is being transformed into a luxury shrug.

It will be accompanied by two rose brooches.

In red, with spring green leaves.

I still found time to work on this little tidbit.

It's going to be a gift for a dear friend.

Is it possible to have a dear friend whom you've never met?

Absolutely!

Here, I'm working with

vintage cotton thread and a vintage hook.

This is going to be a new luxury piece for the shop.

Wait until you see the brooch I'm going to make for it!

Yippee!

So there you have it, dear ones.

I haven't been goofing off.

I've been working like a fiend, actually.

When there are custom orders,

it's not so easy to list new items in my shop.

As always,

I have a long, long list

of future projects.

Now all I need to do is

figure out how to make time stand still...

The other night, my two fellas took me out to dinner.

We went to our favorite little local restaurant.

It's a fish market/restaurant.

Nothing fried on the menu.

Besides the delicious, grilled fresh fish,

they make sinfully delicious parmesan mashed potatoes,

and your choice of summer vegetables steamed

or fresh strawberries.

Not to mention the hot-out-of-the-oven

sourdough rolls with whipped butter.

Mouthwatering!

We had a perfect table with a view.

The place is always packed.

It's a rustic, casual atmosphere.

Fish tanks,

big old hooks, ropes

and...

beware of the dark corners...

My two fellas...

*sniff*

After dinner,

we paused to admire a cool car

in the parking lot.

Our boy will be 15 this fall.

He's very excited to start driving.

I'm NOT ready!

The drive home at dusk...

In case you were wondering...

We didn't skip dessert.

It was waiting for us when we returned home.

Oh yes.

COWBOYS & ALIENS

I went to see it on opening day.

The boy went with me.

We LOVED it.

As soon as Ron gets back from DC,

we'll go see it again.

A movie hasn't thrilled me like this in a long time.

It had everything I like in a movie.

The Wild West.

I long for westerns on the big screen.

The plot was a bit, as Roger Ebert wrote,

cockamamie.

Which is perfect!

That's what the movies are all about, in my humble opinion.

They should be LARGER than life.

Fun.

Action packed.

Exciting.

They should fill your vision

and let you escape.

Inspire.

I laughed.

I cried (I'm a wimp).

I jumped out of my seat.

It was fantastic!

And then there's Daniel Craig.

In western wear.

Unshaven.

Enough said.

If you want my advice,

go see this movie.

It's the perfect summer blockbuster.

I hope it rocks in the theaters.

So that they make a sequel.

The character development was such that

you'll want to find out more about them.

I could go on and on,

but I don't want to spoil the plot for you.

Just go see it,

and have fun.

Tell them Mama D sent you.

I took this photo of our awning last week.

Ron built it with his own two hands.

This is only a corner of one of the two large awnings he built.

I love how this photo looks a bit surreal, almost ghostly.

Kind of like an x-ray.

As if we are looking at the skeletal awning.

As if it were alive.

My husband's hands

create pieces of our home.

It makes our home come alive.

Which, to me,

means everything.

One reason why I love taking photographs?

They sometimes, quite unexpectedly,

capture your deepest feelings.

This one photograph.

Worth a thousand words.

Hello, lovely friends, and Happy Monday to you!

I hope your weekend was everything you hoped it would be.

In the past few days, the world has been filled with heartbreaking news.

As my dear friend, Kateri, wrote on Saturday:

The world seems like a very grim place today.

I agreed with her, and determined to escape that feeling with happy distractions.

Happy distraction is the purpose of this post.

I hope to get your mind off sad news by showing you a few pictures.

Pictures taken last Thursday, July 21st.

Our wedding anniversary.

When I came downstairs Thursday morning,

I saw this.

Ron surprised me with a room filled with roses.

Literally filled.

#weepy

Roses everywhere.

The room smelled heavenly.

These are just like the roses in my wedding bouquet.

I tried to capture them all in a photo.

They simply wouldn't fit in just one.

There were roses of many colors.

Red, cream, pink, salmon, orange, yellow, lavender and white with red edging.

So romantic.

What a man.

Le sigh.

I would like to end this post with

one of my very favorite poems

about marriage.

It was in a book of marriage poems

that Ron gave me for

our sixth wedding anniversary.

Tom Andrews, an exceptional person and poet.

A man who was taken from this earth too soon.

His work stands out on so many levels.

Heavenly caramel sauce...

Happy Monday, dear friends!

I hope your week is off to a super fantastic start.

I had mentioned my newest addiction in a previous post:

Plain yogurt, homemade caramel sauce and fresh sliced berries.

A request for the caramel recipe was made by one of my sweet friends.

So here it is.

The recipe is from the very talented Ina Garten.

I have made a couple of slight changes which I will mark with * and **.

Caramel Sauce Recipe

1 1/2 cups sugar

1/3 cup water

1 1/4 cups heavy cream

1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract

Mix the water and sugar in a medium heavy-bottomed saucepan. Cook over *high heat for 5 to 10 minutes, until the sugar dissolves. Do not stir. Boil uncovered until the sugar turns a warm chestnut brown (about 350 degrees F on a candy thermometer), about 5 to 7 minutes, gently swirling the pan to stir the mixture. Be careful – the mixture is extremely hot! Watch the mixture very carefully at the end, as it will go from caramel to burnt very quickly. Turn off the heat. Stand back to avoid splattering and slowly add the cream and vanilla. Don't worry - the cream will bubble violently and the caramel will solidify.

Simmer over low heat, stirring constantly, until the caramel dissolves and the sauce is smooth **and is a rich caramel brown, about 2 minutes. Allow to cool to room temperature, at least 4 hours. It will thicken as it sits.

* I have found that starting with high heat works best for me (and my gas stove). You may have to experiment to get it just right for you. Ina's recipe suggests starting on low heat and working up to medium.

** Go by the color of the caramel, not the time, when deciding it's done.

There you have it!

It's so simple to make.

The directions may sound a tad complex,

but once you make this sauce, you'll discover it's quite easy.

I hope you give this one a try.

It's excellent on ice cream, cake, yogurt...you get the idea...it's scrumptious!

It's been quite a week around Fringeville.

I cannot believe it's already Friday...sheesh.

Silverthumb update:

Ron's thumb is improving.

He had his second doctor appointment yesterday.

They plan to remove the stitches next Thursday.

I'm currently working on a custom order for

a dear client.

She's been my client for over 3 years.

She is just the kindest, sweetest, gentlest person.

I often wish I could meet my clients.

How wonderful it would be to have a great big party

with all of you invited...

This particular client wrote the most amazing email to me a few days ago.

It made my eyes get all watery.

To think she thought enough of me for this:

"I often imagine you sitting in a magical room surrounded by

yarn from a thousand Arabian Nights!

And then... magical needles flying around!"

Isn't that the most delightful message?

Le sigh...

Wherein Ron almost loses a finger....

This weekend.

Oy.

Saturday, Ron was working on his latest project.

He's building a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall built-in for our bedroom.

Saturday, he was using the table saw.

It all happened in a split second.

The saw grabbed the wood,

and pulled his hand into the saw.

His upper left thumb was cut to the bone.

It could have been much, much worse.

That being said, he came into the house

with a blood soaked paper towel around his hand.

It went something like this:

He said, "It's pretty bad."

Me: "Oh no, what is it?"

R: "My thumb."

Me: "Oh honey. Emergency room?"

R: "Yes."

So off we went. Ron, the boy, and I.

We were lucky, it was a slow day at the ER.

They took us in after only 5 minutes.

{without too much graphic info, there was a lot of blood}

We had a wonderful ER nurse and doctor.

The thumb took 6 stitches.

{The boy watched it all. I had to turn my head.}

He lost his nail, which should grow back in about 6 months.

The doctor stitched on a fake nail.

Something for the cuticle to attach to.

It's silver.

The boy and I began calling him Silverthumb.

The pain was bad the first days.

He didn't sleep the first night,

even with pain meds.

Finally, I poured him a whiskey.

That helped him sleep a couple hours.

Our first doctor visit was last night.

It's already looking better.

We go back on Thursday.

Today, Ron proclaimed a definite pain decrease.

Ron has been working with wood since he was a teenager.

He builds beautiful furniture.

It's his hobby.

What he loves to do,

and he's very skilled.

This was his first accident.

He's still trying to figure out what went wrong.

He keeps playing it back in his mind.

He says he can't explain it,

it happened so fast.

Again, we realize how lucky he was.

The ER nurse and doctor told us

power tool accidents are very common in the ER.

There was a guy there just before Ron.

He cut his hand with a power saw too.

I guess you know how I'm going to feel

when he goes back out to the garage

and starts up that table saw again.

Which I know he will.

So, that's pretty much our last few days

in a nutshell.

We're very thankful that Ron still has

10 fingers.

Inspiration...

Inspiration.

One never knows when it will hit.

Sometimes like a brick,

sometimes like the tickle of a feather.

Today,

inspiration came to me through this...

Ron, checking the levels for the pool....

Just look at those gorgeous colors!

Infinite possibilites for color combinations.

Other things that have inspired me in the last few days...

My gorgeous succulents are flowering.

I love the contrast of greens with reds and oranges.

The dusk sky on 4th of July.

Soft muted gentle shades.

If you study this photo,

you'll discover there are many, many layers of colors.

Tomato, tomahto.

Our beautiful little veggies.

From deep dark, almost black, green

to the lightest, almost white, shade of celery.

As you well know,

I'm endlessly inspired by water.

This turquoise aqua color

immediately lifts my spirit.

I love the play of shadows captured

early this morning in my garden.

It's like garden noir!

Black and cream and purplish periwinkle.

You may not be surprised to see that most of these photos

capture nature....

Nature is the endless source for inspiration.

I hope you felt inspired by these little snapshots.

I thought of you as I took them,

Week 2...

...Week 2 of Ron's trip...

Dear darling friends,

I'm afraid something had to give in my daily/weekly schedule

while Ron's away.

It's obviously been my blogging routine.

As you know, Ron's away for two weeks.

This being week 2.

I've had quite a lot on my plate.

Custom orders have kept me happily occupied.

Though they have sort of slowed down any new additions to the shop.

I do have lots of new pieces coming though.

Stay tuned...

Also,

Keeping our boy occupied to some extent.

Although (please humor me as I go off on a tangent)

I am a firm believer that kids should experience

true boredom in the summer months.

I remember very clearly being bored stiff in the summer.

It helped me to discover our local library which was

conveniently located within walking distance.

I spent hours and hours there.

Magical hours.

I rode my bike along long, silent, sun-baked dirt roads.

I picked wildflowers.

Queen Anne's Lace mostly so that I could make little cages.

Did you ever do that as a kid?

I made magnificent card houses with my friend.

You get the idea.

I found things to do.

All children should experience that same incentive inducing boredom.

(End of side trip along memory lane)

And let's not forget

the endless domestic type things
(and 100 little odds and ends)
that take up a lot of time too,

as you well know.

So, you see, this is my roundabout way of saying I missed you,

and I'm sorry I've been away so long.

I'd like to share some photos I've taken in the past week.

Sort of a week in pictures.

The boy had friends over last Tuesday.

And so it begins.

I love my succulent hanging baskets.

Easy peasy to care for and

downright gorgeous.

Or as a girlfriend said to me,

YESSSS!

LOVE that thought!

Backyard posy harvest.

They are now in vases and bowls of water.

Brightening our days.

Plain yogurt,

homemade caramel sauce,

fresh strawberries.

Every day for breakfast.

I'm addicted.

Turquoise toenails!

Yippee skippee!

On a particularly slow day,

we made up a game.

I paid the boy a penny for each consecutive basket.

The rules became very complex.

I'll spare you the gory details.

In the end,

I owed him $4.

Ouch!

I spent some time relaxing in the water.

The water element inspires me like nothing else.

You probably already know that about me...

*wink*

I'll admit it.

I've had a little icy cocktail

a couple of evenings.

Gin and tonic with lime,

come to mama.

All and all.

If you take out the part where

I worry my head off about Ron.

And the fact that the boy and I

miss him terribly,

It's truly been nothing but blues skies around here.

Speaking of Ron,

it had already started...

Speaking of countdowns...

Ron leaves tomorrow for a

long trip.

Over two weeks in Asia.

*sniff*

I guess he thought 5 lbs. of Red Vines

would ease the pain.

And don't forget,

Red Vines are "always fat free".

I admit I'm feeling blue about Ron's trip.

Don't worry, I'll snap out of it.

I have our boy to think of.

No sad saps allowed! :)

He and I will have fun together,

that's for sure.

Still, I worry so

when Ron's away from us.

It seems like only yesterday...

...when our boy wouldn't leave the house without Fluffy.

Today was his 8th grade graduation.

*sniff*

I made myself weepy with that photo of Fluffy.

To cheer myself up,

I put on my green shoes,

Ron's [cuffed] Levis,

and attempted to compose myself

before the graduation ceremony.

As it happened,

I didn't make a fool of myself
